Which Rooms Are Best for Wallpaper?
Powder rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, home offices, and accent walls are some of the best places to use wallpaper, because they offer high impact with lower wear and moisture.
Wallpaper can work in almost any room with the right material and preparation, but some spaces are easier wins than others.
Powder Rooms
A powder room is one of the most popular places for wallpaper. It is small, so you need less material, and guests spend a moment there, which makes it a great place for a bold pattern.
Because powder rooms usually do not have a shower, humidity is often less of a concern than in full bathrooms.
Dining Rooms
Dining rooms are often used for gatherings and tend to see less everyday wear than kitchens or hallways. Wallpaper can add warmth and character, especially above wainscoting or chair rail.
Bedrooms
A wallpapered wall behind the bed is a simple way to create a focal point. Softer patterns and textures can make a bedroom feel calm and finished.
Nurseries and Kids’ Rooms
Wallpaper and murals can bring a playful theme to a child’s room. For rooms that may see crayons and sticky hands, a scrubbable or washable material is often a smart choice.
Home Offices
If you spend time on video calls, a wallpapered wall can make a polished backdrop and help the space feel separate from the rest of the house.
Accent Walls Anywhere
If you are not ready to wallpaper a whole room, an accent wall lets you try a pattern with less commitment. Fireplace walls, entryways, and the wall at the end of a hallway can all work well.
Rooms That Need More Planning
Wallpaper can still work in these spaces, but material choice and prep matter more:
- Full bathrooms: Steam and humidity call for suitable materials and good ventilation. See my guide on wallpaper in bathrooms.
- Kitchens: Areas near cooking and sinks may need a durable, cleanable material.
- Mudrooms and hallways: High traffic means scuffs, so durability is important.
- Ceilings: Beautiful, but more challenging to install. Learn more in Can You Wallpaper a Ceiling?
