Mural vs wallpaper: which is right for your wall?

Mural or wallpaper?

Both transform a room, but they work in different ways. Here is how I help clients choose.

Black and gold floral wallpaper installation framing three windows

Wallpaper

A pattern that wraps the room

A repeating design printed on rolls. It flows around corners, windows and doors, so it works on one accent wall or an entire room.

Best for

Powder rooms, dining rooms and entryways
Whole-room wraps and ceilings
Texture, like grasscloth and textured papers

Good to know

Ordered by the roll, allowing for the pattern repeat
Most rooms take one to two days to install

Mural

One scene, one statement wall

A single large image, like an ocean wave, a forest or a landscape, that spans the whole wall. It arrives in numbered panels that have to line up perfectly.

Best for

Bedroom headboard walls and nurseries
Playrooms and home office backdrops
Adding a view or a sense of depth to a small room

Good to know

Sized to your exact wall, so measure before you order
Needs a smooth, well-prepped wall for clean seams

Feature	Wallpaper	Mural
Design	Repeating pattern	One continuous scene
Coverage	Accent wall to whole room	Usually one feature wall
Ordering	By the roll	Custom-sized to your wall
Installing	Pattern matched at every seam	Panels hung in order so the image flows

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Bridgette did a phenomenal job at installing the mural in my nursery. The mural was a complex landscape scene that required the seams to be perfectly aligned. Even up close, we can’t see the seams at all. She was fast and professional. Would highly recommend!

Wallpaper installation FAQs

Answers to the questions I hear most. Don’t see yours? Ask me directly.

How much does professional wallpaper installation cost?

The cost of wallpaper installation depends on the size of the space, type of wallpaper, condition of the walls, pattern complexity, and amount of preparation required. I provide a complimentary estimate after discussing your project so you know what to expect before installation begins.

Do you install wallpaper that I already purchased?

Yes! If you already have your wallpaper selected, I can professionally install it for you. If you’re still deciding on a wallpaper, I can also help you choose a style, pattern, or material that works beautifully with your space.

What types of wallpaper do you install?

I work with a variety of wallcoverings, including traditional wallpaper, pre-pasted wallpaper, thick and textured peel-and-stick wallpaper (I don’t install thin, smooth peel-and-stick), murals, specialty wallcoverings, and papers with patterns that require precise matching. If you have a particular product in mind, contact me and I’ll be happy to discuss whether it’s suitable for your project.

Do my walls need to be prepared before wallpaper installation?

Proper wall preparation is one of the most important parts of a beautiful wallpaper installation. Walls may need cleaning, patching, sanding, priming, or other preparation depending on their current condition. I can assess your walls and recommend the preparation needed before installation.

Can you remove my existing wallpaper first?

Yes. I offer wallpaper removal as well as surface preparation and wall repair when needed. Preparing the surface properly before installing new wallpaper helps create a smoother, more professional finished result.

Can you install wallpaper on just one accent wall?

Absolutely. Accent and feature walls are a great way to introduce pattern, texture, or color without wallpapering an entire room. I can install wallpaper on a single statement wall or throughout an entire space.

Can you help me determine how much wallpaper to order?

Yes. Wallpaper quantities depend on the dimensions of your walls as well as the wallpaper’s roll size and pattern repeat. I can help evaluate your project so you can order an appropriate amount and account for pattern matching and installation.

Which rooms are good for wallpaper?

Wallpaper can work beautifully in powder rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, home offices, entryways, living spaces, nurseries, and many other areas of the home. The best wallpaper and material will depend on the room, wall conditions, and the look you want to create.

Do you offer wallpaper installation outside Columbus?

Yes. Namaste Design & Painting provides wallpaper installation in Columbus and surrounding Central Ohio communities, including New Albany, Westerville, Gahanna, Upper Arlington, and Bexley.

How do I get an estimate for wallpaper installation?

Start by contacting Namaste Design & Painting for a free consultation. Tell me about your space, the wallpaper you’re considering or have already purchased, and what you’d like to accomplish. I’ll discuss your project with you and provide a complimentary estimate before the work begins.
