Wallpaper Murals: What to Know Before You Install One
A wallpaper mural can transform a room, but because it is one continuous image, it needs careful measuring, wall preparation, and precise panel alignment to look right.
Unlike standard wallpaper with a repeating pattern, a mural is designed to be seen as a single picture. Small mistakes are much easier to notice.
How Is a Mural Different From Regular Wallpaper?
Most murals are printed as a set of numbered panels sized to your wall. Each panel has to be installed in order and lined up exactly with the next one so the image flows without visible breaks.
There is usually very little extra material, so there is less room for error than with standard rolls.
Choosing the Right Wall
Murals tend to work best on walls that are:
- Mostly uninterrupted by windows, doors, and outlets
- Visible from the main entry point of the room
- Sized to let the main focal point of the image sit where you want it
Popular spots include nurseries, accent walls behind a bed or sofa, dining rooms, home offices, and stairwells.
Measuring Matters
Before ordering, measure the width and height of the wall at several points, since walls and ceilings are not always perfectly straight. Many mural companies recommend adding extra size around the edges for trimming.
It is also worth thinking about where key parts of the image will land. A face, horizon line, or focal point cut off by a light switch or trim is hard to fix after the mural is printed.
Wall Preparation for Murals
Because murals are large and continuous, wall flaws can show clearly. Prep often includes:
- Patching holes and cracks
- Smoothing texture where needed
- Cleaning the surface
- Applying a primer suited to the mural material
If your walls are textured, my article on installing wallpaper over textured walls explains the options.
Why Professional Installation Helps
Mural installation is about precision. Panels have to be plumb, seams have to be tight, and the image has to match from one panel to the next. One crooked first panel can throw off the entire wall.
I have installed complex landscape murals where the goal was for seams to be invisible, even up close. That level of finish comes from careful layout before the first panel goes up.
