Can You Paint Over Wallpaper?
You can paint over wallpaper in some situations, but in most homes, removing the wallpaper first gives a cleaner, longer-lasting result.
Painting over wallpaper can look like a shortcut. Sometimes it works. Other times, it creates problems that are harder to fix later.
When Painting Over Wallpaper Might Work
Painting over wallpaper may be a reasonable option when:
- The wallpaper is firmly attached everywhere, with no loose seams or edges
- The surface is smooth, without heavy texture or raised patterns
- Removal would likely cause serious damage to fragile walls
- The room is a lower-priority space where a perfect finish is not the goal
Why Removal Is Usually the Better Choice
There are several risks with painting over wallpaper:
- Bubbling: Moisture in paint can reactivate wallpaper adhesive and cause bubbles or lifting.
- Visible seams: Wallpaper seams often show through paint, especially with satin or semi-gloss finishes.
- Pattern bleed-through: Some inks can show through without the right primer.
- Harder removal later: Painted wallpaper is usually much more difficult to remove in the future.
If you ever plan to sell, remodel, or change your design, those painted-over layers can make the next project more time-consuming.
If You Do Paint Over Wallpaper
Preparation becomes even more important. A careful approach generally includes:
- Re-adhering any loose seams or edges
- Cleaning the surface
- Applying an oil-based or shellac-based primer that will not soak into and loosen the paper
- Skim coating seams if they show
- Using a flatter paint sheen to help hide imperfections
Using a water-based primer directly over wallpaper is one of the most common reasons painted wallpaper bubbles.
What About Painting Over Wallpaper Residue?
Even after wallpaper is removed, leftover adhesive should be washed off before painting. Paint applied over residue can crack, peel, or develop an uneven texture.
