How Long Does Wallpaper Last?
Well-installed, good-quality wallpaper can often last 10 to 15 years or longer, and some papers last much longer than that in low-traffic rooms.
How long yours lasts depends less on the calendar and more on the material, the room, the wall preparation, and how the wallpaper was installed.
Here is what I look at when homeowners ask how long their wallpaper will hold up.
What Affects How Long Wallpaper Lasts?
Several factors work together:
- Material: Vinyl and vinyl-coated papers are generally more durable and washable than uncoated paper, grasscloth, or other natural materials.
- Room type: A guest bedroom sees far less wear than a mudroom, hallway, or kids’ room.
- Moisture and humidity: Bathrooms and laundry rooms can shorten wallpaper life if ventilation is poor.
- Sunlight: Strong direct sun can fade some colors and inks over time.
- Wall preparation: Wallpaper applied over properly cleaned, repaired, and primed walls tends to stay put much longer.
- Installation quality: Tight seams, proper adhesive, and correct booking times all affect long-term results.
Does Peel-and-Stick Wallpaper Last as Long?
Usually not. Peel-and-stick wallpaper is designed with removability in mind, so it is often a better fit for shorter-term projects, rentals, or small spaces.
In many cases, it may start to lift at the edges or seams sooner than traditional pasted wallpaper, especially in humid rooms or on textured walls.
A note on what I install: I only install thick, textured peel-and-stick wallpaper. I don’t install thin, smooth peel-and-stick products.
Signs Your Wallpaper Is Wearing Out
Wallpaper rarely fails all at once. Common signs it may be time to repair or replace it include:
- Seams that are lifting or opening
- Bubbles or loose areas that keep coming back
- Fading or discoloration
- Stains that will not clean off
- Tears or scuffs in high-traffic areas
- A pattern that simply no longer fits your style
Small issues like a lifted seam can sometimes be repaired. Widespread peeling or moisture damage usually means it is time for removal and a fresh installation.
How Can You Make Wallpaper Last Longer?
- Choose a material suited to the room, such as a scrubbable vinyl for busy areas
- Run exhaust fans in bathrooms during and after showers
- Clean gently using the method the manufacturer recommends
- Address small seam issues before they spread
- Start with proper wall prep and professional installation
Is Wallpaper Worth It Long Term?
For many homeowners, yes. Because quality wallpaper can last many years, it can be a smart choice for rooms where you want a lasting design statement, such as a powder room, dining room, or accent wall.
