Can You Put Wallpaper in a Bathroom?
Yes, wallpaper can be used in many bathrooms, including powder rooms and some full bathrooms. The key is choosing an appropriate wallcovering, preparing the wall correctly, and considering the amount of moisture and ventilation in the room.
Bathrooms are actually one of my favorite places to use wallpaper because even a small space can make a big design statement.
Is Wallpaper Good for a Powder Room?
Powder rooms are excellent candidates for wallpaper.
Because they’re smaller, you can experiment with patterns and colors that might feel overwhelming in a larger room.
Botanical prints, geometric patterns, dramatic colors, and sophisticated textures can turn an otherwise simple powder room into one of the most memorable spaces in your home.
What About a Bathroom With a Shower?
This requires more consideration.
A bathroom with a shower or tub typically experiences considerably more humidity than a powder room. Good ventilation becomes important, as does choosing a wallcovering appropriate for the environment.
Wallpaper should also not be treated as a substitute for materials intended for areas that receive direct water exposure.
Always review the wallpaper manufacturer’s recommendations for the intended environment.
What Kind of Wallpaper Works Best in a Bathroom?
There isn’t one wallpaper that’s right for every bathroom.
Consider:
- Moisture resistance
- Manufacturer recommendations
- Bathroom ventilation
- Wall condition
- Placement of the wallpaper
- Frequency of shower or bath use
- Desired design and finish
The prettiest wallpaper isn’t necessarily the best wallpaper for a particular environment.
Does the Wall Need Special Preparation?
Proper preparation is important anywhere, but bathrooms deserve additional attention.
The surface should be clean, sound, and appropriately prepared before installation. Existing wall damage or moisture-related issues should be addressed rather than simply covered with wallpaper.
The goal isn’t only to make the wallpaper look good on installation day. It’s to give the wallcovering the right conditions to perform well.
Should You Wallpaper the Whole Bathroom or One Wall?
Both can work.
A single wallpapered wall can create a focal point while allowing paint and other finishes to balance the room.
Full-room wallpaper can create a much more immersive design and works particularly well in powder rooms.
Your room size, wallpaper pattern, lighting, fixtures, and existing finishes should all influence the decision.
Think About the Whole Room
Wallpaper shouldn’t be selected in isolation.
Consider how the pattern works with your:
- Vanity
- Countertops
- Flooring
- Fixtures
- Lighting
- Paint colors
- Mirrors and accessories
This is where my background in color consultation and interior design becomes particularly helpful.
