Does Wallpaper Need Special Wall Preparation? A Columbus Homeowner’s Guide

August 21, 2026

You’ve chosen the perfect wallpaper—but before the first panel goes up, there’s an important step that can make a big difference in the finished result: wall preparation.

Yes, walls generally need to be properly prepared before wallpaper installation. Wallpaper performs best on a surface that is clean, smooth, dry, stable, and appropriately primed. Holes, cracks, texture, damaged drywall, peeling paint, or old wallpaper may need attention before installation begins.

At Namaste Design & Painting, I consider wall preparation an important part of creating a beautiful, professional wallpaper installation.

Why Is Wall Preparation Important Before Wallpapering?

Wallpaper sits directly against the surface of your wall, so imperfections underneath can affect the finished appearance.

Proper preparation can help:

  • Create a smoother finished surface
  • Improve wallpaper adhesion
  • Reduce the appearance of imperfections
  • Make pattern alignment and seams look cleaner
  • Protect the underlying wall
  • Make future wallpaper removal easier

The amount of preparation needed depends on the condition of your walls and the wallcovering you’ve selected.

Do Walls Need to Be Primed Before Wallpaper Installation?

In many cases, priming is recommended before wallpaper installation.

Wallpaper primer creates a more suitable surface between the wall and the adhesive. The appropriate preparation can vary depending on whether you’re working with new drywall, previously painted walls, repaired areas, or another existing surface.

The wallpaper manufacturer’s instructions should also be considered because different wallcoverings and adhesives may have specific requirements.

Can You Install Wallpaper Over Painted Walls?

Yes, wallpaper can often be installed over painted walls, but that doesn’t mean the wallpaper should simply be applied directly over any painted surface.

The wall should first be inspected for peeling or loose paint, holes, cracks, dirt, uneven areas, and other problems.

The type and condition of the existing paint can also affect the preparation required. Glossy or slick surfaces, for example, may need additional attention before wallpaper installation.

Do Nail Holes and Cracks Need to Be Repaired?

Yes. Holes, cracks, dents, and other imperfections should generally be addressed before wallpaper goes up.

Wallpaper isn’t a substitute for wall repair.

Depending on the wallpaper, imperfections underneath the material may remain noticeable after installation. Preparing and smoothing the wall beforehand creates a better foundation for the finished wallcovering.

Can Wallpaper Be Installed on Textured Walls?

It depends on the amount and type of texture.

Wallpaper generally performs best on a smooth surface. Heavy wall texture can interfere with adhesion and may show through certain wallcoverings.

If you have textured walls in your Columbus home, they should be evaluated before purchasing or installing wallpaper. Depending on the surface and the wallpaper you’ve chosen, additional preparation may be needed to create a smoother substrate.

Should Old Wallpaper Be Removed First?

In most situations, removing existing wallpaper before installing new wallpaper is the better approach.

Old wallpaper can hide damaged drywall, loose seams, old adhesive, moisture issues, or other surface problems. Installing new wallpaper over it can also introduce additional variables that affect adhesion and the final appearance.

Removing the old wallpaper allows the wall underneath to be inspected, repaired, and properly prepared before the new design is installed.

Can Wallpaper Hide Bad or Uneven Walls?

This is a common misconception.

Wallpaper may visually disguise very minor imperfections, but it shouldn’t be used to cover significant wall damage or uneven surfaces.

Some wallcoverings are also more forgiving than others. A textured or heavier material may disguise minor imperfections better than a thin, smooth paper.

If the wall has significant cracks, holes, peeling paint, damaged drywall, or heavy texture, correcting those problems first will generally produce a better result.

What Happens After the Walls Are Prepared?

Once the surface is ready, the wallpaper layout can be planned.

For patterned wallpaper, this includes considering where the design begins, how the pattern repeats across panels, and how it interacts with corners, windows, doors, and architectural details.

The wallpaper can then be installed according to the manufacturer’s requirements, with careful attention to pattern alignment, seams, edges, and trimming.

Should I Prepare the Walls Myself?

You may be able to handle basic tasks such as removing artwork or clearing the work area, but it’s a good idea to have your wallpaper installer evaluate the walls before doing extensive preparation yourself.

The preparation needed depends on the existing surface and the wallpaper being installed. Doing unnecessary—or incorrect—prep work can create additional work rather than save it.

If you’re unsure, ask your installer what should be completed before installation day.
